FAQs
What is a congenital heart defect (CHD)?
CHD is a problem with the heart's structure or electrical system that is present at birth. It covers a wide range of conditions.
How common are heart defects?
Heart defects are the most common type of birth defect, affecting about 1 in 100 babies. Most of the time there is no known cause, and about 80% happen in pregnancies with no known risk factors.
Can heart defects be found before birth?
Most can be seen at the 20-week anatomy scan. Book it between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy.
What does Tiny HeartsCan do?
We train sonographers to recognize more heart defects at the 20-week scan, send free educational resources to clinics, and raise awareness with parents and medical professionals. We do not diagnose, scan, or give medical advice. If you have concerns about your pregnancy or your baby, speak with your doctor, midwife, or cardiology team.
How can my clinic get free resources?
Download full-resolution, print-ready files of the Sonographer Pamphlet, Scanning Planes Poster and Parent Pamphlet from our For Professionals page, or use our Request Resources form to have printed copies shipped to your clinic. Shipping is free within Canada.
